Verified Dun Morgans

The descriptions on this site are to aid in identifying the particular shade of a dun horse. All duns, regardless of their shade, must have a coat color that has been diluted, having yellow-tan or dove/slate tones, and have some combination of dun (primitive) markings, such as dorsal stripe, leg barring, wither stripe, cob webbing, etc.

Photo Copyright vs. Current Owner of Horse

On these pages, photo copyright credits are listed with each photo. However, the photo copyright owner may not be the current owner of that horse, as it may have been sold, or someone else took the photo of that horse and contributed it to DCS for use here.

Look-A-Like Individual Photos

In this section, we have displayed individual photos of a number of horses who may be dun "look-a-likes" at least during certain seasons, and/or have counter shading markings.

Best's Bedazzled
Bay/Brown Morgan filly

Bedazzled was born with a very vivid and pronounced dorsal, as well as wither and neck markings. Neither parent has any dilution genes at all, so she cannot be a dun dilute.

NHM Misty Morning
Bay Morgan mare

This mare was registered by her breeder as buckskin, but she it is quite possible that she is light bay w/pangare. Her current owner plans to have her tested for the cream gene. Her sire is buckskin and her dam chestnut. Without a dun dilute parent, she cannot be a dun, even though she does sport a dorsal.

Cinco de Myia
Chestnut Morgan mare

Even though her coat appears diluted at times, and she does exhibit a dorsal and chest markings/stripes, both of her parents are chestnuts, so we know Myia cannot be a dun dilute.

"Maggie"
Chestnut Quarter Horse filly

Maggie is pictured here at about 1 to 2 weeks of age, with a very well defined, dark red dorsal that clearly runs through her tail. Her sire is chestnut (sorrel) and her dam is bay, so Maggie cannot be red dun. Red dun foals are generally more "pink" looking at birth, while Maggie appears to simple be lighter red.

Late summer 2005

Early spring 2006

Anxious Ashley
Black Standardbred mare

Ashley is fading black who becomes quite "grulla-looking" in later summer. The early spring photo shows, however, that she is indeed a black. The Standardbred breed is not known to have any of the dilution genes to the best of our knowledge at this time.

Casanova
Brown Buckskin Warmblood colt

Casanova is classic of a brown buckskin foal, with his dark shaded head/neck/shoulder, as well as the already advanced shadowing on his leg points. His dark, vivid dorsal is also fairly typical of a brown based foal. Casanova's sire is a lighter expressed brown Warmblood stallion. His dam is his only "color" source, and she is a palomino Thoroughbred. There is no dun dilution in the Thoroughbred breed, so no chance of her being a dunalino.

Brightest Gold
2001 Buckskin Thoroughbred filly

This filly has a very prominent counter shading dorsal. Her dam is the same palomino mare pictured with the brown buckskin Warmblood colt above. Again, there is no dun dilution in the Thoroughbred bred, so no chance that this filly could be a dun color.

Ever The Gentleman
2003 Smoky Black Paint gelding

The dorsal on this foal is a counter shading dorsal, which is very commonly seen on smoky black foals. His newborn coat color is not diluted to the light dove-gray or buff with dove tones of a grulla foal.

Black Velvet Lady
Smoky Black APHA mare

This young mare does a wonderful impersonation of a grulla in summer coat when she fades.

Silver Brigadier
Bay/Brown Silver Dapple Saddlebred

The silver dapple dilution gene is very rare in the Saddlebred breed, but the dun gene is not known to exist at all. This silver dapple foal has a counter shading dorsal.

Corizon de Oro
Buckskin Morgan gelding

Sire's parents names?? Cori's neck markings are caused by seasonal sootiness. He only has these markings during seasonal coat transitions.

Royal Gold Sunara (Sunny)
Morgan mare

Sunny's sire is the perlino Morgan stallion, Finallys Mr Andy, who only has cream dilute parents. Her dam has no dilution genes at all.

Her wither marking is very dark, and she even appears to have some counter shading markings extending from her dorsal area, resembling dorsal barbs. These markings vary during seasonal coat transitions, just as counter shading markings normally will.

Look-A-Like Collages

In this section, each horse has it's own page with more detailed explanation of why they are not dun dilutes.

On each horse's web page, the collage of photos will download at full size. See approx. file size of that full sized version below the smaller collage on this page to estimate your download time. The full sized collage is the only photo on that web page, so download times, even for dial up, should not be too "painful" for most people.
