Black foal color can vary from inky-black
to a chocolate-black. The two black fillies shown
above are good examples of typical black foal colors.
The first filly's black with slight brown tones is
very common. The second black filly is more of a chocolate-black,
which is not uncommon at all. Black foals commonly
have counter shading dorsals and may also have counter
shading leg markings.
The smoky black filly in top row has
a dark golden brown coat in this photo. Outdoor photos
did not look quite as "brown". They more
closely resembled the second smoky black (bottom row,
left), whose coloring appears mousy-black. Smoky black
foals commonly have counter shading dorsals and may
also have counter shading leg markings.
The two grulla foals shown above are
very typical of dove-gray and buff with dove tones.
Both are very clearly diluted and much generally paler
than the black or smoky black foals. Grulla foals
are born with clean, black dun dorsal, and may or
may not be born with visible leg bars. They generally
display black-ish face masking just above the nostrils.
